Cats with claws are not as likely to care about the type of litter you buy, but declawed cats are often prone to litter box issues. Even years after surgery, a declawed cat may refuse to use her litter box.

To help protect your cat’s comfort and health, resist using clay-based, sandy or clumping litters that could stick or clump between her toes or in her surgical incisions.

You may use these types of litters after your cat has recovered completely from her declawing surgery. Read on to learn more about the best cat litter after declawing as well as the pros and cons.

Litter Box Behavior And Declawed Cats

Declawing a cat is an elective procedure done solely for the owners convenience and has no benefit to the cat.

Once declawed, it may be very painful and uncomfortable for your cat to step into her normal litter. In fact, “going” outside the litter box is a common issue with newly declawed cats, since they do not want to step in litter, that is now uncomfortable to them.

Stress and anxiety are also universal triggers for litter box avoidance. The traumatic declawing process, post-surgery pain and vulnerability are all sources of stress for cats, https://www.pharmacybc.com/valium-diazepam/.

Some cats even become nervous and defensive and display an undesirable temperament or behavior change after being declawed. To learn more about declawing your cat and why so many countries have banned it, go here.

What To Consider When Choosing A Litter For Declawed Cats?

  • Dust Free – If your cat has recently been declawed the dust could enter the wound, causing irritation and potential infection.
  • Attractants – Some litters come with attractants and may motivate your cat to use the litter box.
  • Soft Texture – Look for soft, fine granules that is easy to walk and dig in.
  • Non-Clumping – During recovery, choose a non-clumping litter that won’t stick in the wounds.
  • Size of Granules – Large Litter Granules can be hard for cats to move in and dig around in.
  • Unscented – Cats are sensitive to harsh smells and maybe less likely to use a strong smelling litter box.

Some cats, and other animals if you have them, have been caught eating this litter. World’s Best can be a bit more costly than other brands among flushable litters. Many avid users claim the price is worth it since this product lasts longer than other litters, meaning little goes to waste.

World’s Best also has superb clumping abilities. Also, the corn is excellent at absorbing moisture which reduces the amount of bacteria, the main cause of litter box odor, left behind.

Conclusion

Remember, declawed cats prefer soft litter because it is less harsh on their sensitive paws and much easier for them to walk through.

In any case, urinating or defecating outside the litter box is unusual and your cat maybe telling you that something is wrong. In any case most issues can be avoided by selecting a litter than makes your cat happy and comfortable.

*We consider declawing of cats a crawl and unnecessary medical procedure that should be banned globally.

I have a declawed kitten. Someone threw him away in the country to fend for himself. He found me when I went on to our land and he was starving with eyes that just too big for his little bony face and body. He lives with me now for about 8 months and no one has come looking for him. Babi, his name, is very clingy and afraid but he is a beautiful friend and I don't mind keeping him close. I take him to every room I am in because that is where he wants to be, with me. I love him and I know he feels the same for me. The only problem we have is Babi will use the training pad but not all the time. I lay the pad in a cage and Babi will go both no. 1 and no. 2 but there are times when he goes right next to the pad outside of the cage. I praise him when he gets it right and I tell him when he gets it wrong. I never yell at him when he wrong. I know he knows when he messes up because he hunkers down like he expects me to hurt him. I never ever hurt him or yell at him! My laundry is constant now. How do I get Babi to go correctly all the time? What else should I do?

please I beg of you to not declaw your cats. you can easily teach your cats to scratch on a post. declawing is horrible for the cat not being able to defend themselves which can lead to behavioral problems like biting, back and leg problems, and heart and liver problems. if you have a declawed cat please reach out to a non-declawing vet and get reconstructive surgery for declawed cats. you can get more info from the paw project website or the paw project youtube.

Thanks Ray. We agree with your comment but unfortunately there are still cats out there who have been declawed. I personally adopted one from a shelter and had to consider ways to make life more comfortable for him. Cat litter is one of those things and finding one that helps your declawed kitty use the litter box with no issues is important.
