Best Wet and Canned Cat Food

Best Wet and Canned Cat Food

Many cat owners rely on dry cat food because it is less expensive, easy to store and it can be left out all day for your cat to nibble on. Wet and canned food is more expensive than dry food but both can be nutritionally complete. Dry cat food can be high in carbohydrates and there is some evidence that shows this may predispose certain cats in becoming overweight and possibly developing other health issues. The single biggest difference between the two food types is the moisture content, with wet and canned food having a much higher moisture content than dry food.

Benefits of Wet and Canned Cat Food

Quality wet or canned cat food is rich in nutrients and usually more so than a quality dry cat food. Today there is a wet food formula for nearly every feline diet including organic, high protein, weight-maintenance, diabetic, sensitive-stomach and more. In general, wet and canned foods usually contain less wheat, grains, and other carbohydrates that are found in mass produced dry cat food. These carbohydrates, in large amounts, are not healthy for your cat’s diet and can cause problems for some cats.

The high moisture content in wet and canned cat food can be beneficial to cats with urinary tract problems, kidney disease or diabetes It can help compensate for a low thirst drive, which may be partly due to their evolution. The higher protein levels found in wet and canned food may be beneficial to strict carnivores like cats, who depend on consuming animals to meet their nutritional needs and require up to three times the protein of omnivores.

Wet and canned cat foods are similar to food your cat would eat in the wild and they usually have higher levels of animal-based proteins. Wet and canned foods are also not exposed to as much heat, as dry food during the cooking process, so it maintains more of its nutrients.

Wet and canned cat food is known for the following:

  • It has higher moisture content, which helps keep your cat hydrated and may lower the chance of urinary-tract problems.
  • Wet and canned food is often more appealing for finicky eaters.
  • It tends to have more fat and animal protein, with fewer carbohydrates, than dry food.

NomNomNow Cat Food Review

NomNomNow Cat Food Review

NomNomNow, Inc is a subscription cat (and dog) food delivery service that is all the rage right now. They not only deliver fully customized meals to your door, but also guarantees to provide human grade, restaurant quality ingredients in every meal.

NomNomNow was created by four co-founders; Alexandria Jarrell, Wenzhe Gao, and brothers Nate and Zach Phillips. In 2015, these four animal lovers began producing and shipping out fresh and healthy meals. As of May 2018, the company started offering cat food.

The company prepares their recipes in a California, FDA compliant, kitchen with the help of board-certified veterinary nutritionist Dr. Justin Shmalberg, who guides recipe creation and production.

How it Works

To get started with NomNomNow, you will create a profile for your pet, which asks you to share their current weight, target weight, and preferred protein. This part is necessary to get a price quote, because portion sizes for each animal will depend on its weight.

Once you are all signed up, you will get a shipment with 14 meal packs of the selected meal choice but  you can always go back and change your preferences if you want to try something else. You will be updated on every stage of your delivery via email as well as provided tracking information. The first box also includes fun treats, like a bag of chicken jerky.

Once you’ve selected your cats meal plan, you will receive monthly shipments of 56 individual packets of food, which will arrive boxed fresh with ice packs to keep it cool. The packets should be stored in the freezer and removed in small batches to thaw in the fridge.

What’s in the Box?

The first shipment arrived safe in a heavy-duty brown shipping box with the company’s logo on the side. A message on the box recommends refrigerating the contents as soon as possible. Our trial order contained 14 meal packs of the Chicken Chow-Wow recipe and the Flavorful Fresh Fish recipe. The food was safely wrapped up between two large reusable gel ice packs and a thick insulating liner made of 100% recyclable PET. Everything was nice and cold inside but should be refrigerated as soon as possible. The packaging also states that you should use or freeze the food packets within 8 days of receiving them. There was a detailed information booklet, recommended servings brochure and feeding magnet inside. Also included with the order was a bag of chicken jerky, a flavor packet and a container of beef broth.

  • Healthier immune system –This fresh food is rich in all-natural vitamins, such as A, C and zinc. These nutrients help your cat’s immune system stay strong and healthy.
  • Less waste Since there are no fillers, there will be less poop. Every ingredient is made to give cats the nutrients they need so they can use more of the food.
  • Better hydration –Cats get most of their water intake from the foods they eat. If their diet lacks moisture, they usually won’t make it up by drinking more. These meals are moisture rich to ensure your cat stays hydrated.

Taste Test

Honestly, my kitties are not picky eaters. But I noticed right away they both really liked the food. As soon as I put the bowls down, they threw their faces in and there was a lot of warning growls going back and forth. By the second feeding, I couldn’t get the food out of the package before one cat was crawling up my leg and the other was plotting to trip me. Feedings have become a little aggressive, but that is probably a sign that both kitties really love this food. There was no difference in their reactions, whether I was feeding them the Chicken Chow-Meow or the Flavorful Fish Feast.

NomNomNow Cat Food Review

My Thoughts

I really like that I can see  and identify the ingredients in the cat food. I also like the ease of the pre-portioned packs being the right amount for each meal. This is a great replacement for wet food and the ingredients can’t be beat. However, a company that delivers fresh cat food to your door at an average of $35 per week, isn’t cheap.

Best Cat Food for Diabetic Cats

Best Cat Food for Diabetic Cats

Diabetes mellitus is a condition that develops when your cat cannot use sugar adequately and control the sugar or glucose level in her blood. There are two types of feline diabetes, and while there is no cure, cats with either type can be successfully managed through nutrition, exercise, and if necessary, regular insulin medication. With the best cat food for diabetic cats and guidance from your veterinarian, your cat can enjoy a happy, healthy life.

Best Rated Cat Food for Cats with Diabetes

What to Feed your Diabetic Cat

Since the dietary requirements of diabetic cats depend upon numerous factors, discuss your cat’s diet with your veterinarian. Do not change your cat’s diet except under the direction of your veterinarian.

Wet food –  You and your veterinarian should choose the type of food prior to the start of insulin regulation. Most wet brands contain insignificant amounts of carbohydrates. Wet cat foods are already high in protein and low in carbs. Many dry cat foods are made with starch, which makes them higher in carbohydrates.

Raw food – Raw food for cats will have zero or the least amount of carbohydrates compared to other types of cat foods. Many cat owners report their diabetic cats going in to complete remission after switching to a raw diet.

Essential fatty acids –  Omega 3 fatty acids and GLA have been shown to both enhance glucose metabolism and protect against secondary cardiovascular problems in diabetics. While the diet should be lower in dietary fat overall, the supplementation of Essential Fatty Acids can often be beneficial. It is also useful in preventing diabetes.

Prebiotics – Prebiotics are fibers that promote the growth of healthy bacteria in the gut. These fibers, especially fresh greens from the soil for humans, are often soluble fibers. Prebiotics may increase survival of probiotics.

High fiber – High amounts of fiber in the diet can affect the absorption and metabolism of glucose and fat in the diet. The fiber will slow glucose absorption from the digestive tract so there is not a high peak in blood glucose level right after eating. High fiber diets also promote weight loss. To be most effective, diets with high fiber must also contain significant amounts of complex carbohydrates. These diets can decrease the need for insulin.

High protein/Low carbohydrate – The most recent studies have suggested that a diet high in protein and fat, and low in carbohydrates may be more beneficial for most cats than high fiber diets. High protein and fat levels are typically found in diets made specifically for diabetic cats.  In comparing canned high fiber diets versus low carbohydrate diets, cats fed low carbohydrate diets were 10 times more likely to discontinue insulin injections.

Causes

Diabetes in cats is believed to be caused by too many calories in the diet and too little activity. Sedentary and over weight cats develop Type 2 diabetes, which is the insulin-resistant type also seen in humans. Type I diabetes (insulin dependent diabetes mellitus) occurs when the body is completely unable to manufacture insulin but quite rare in cats. A diet with fewer calories per ounce, less fat, fewer carbohydrates and more protein, will  help cats lose weight and regulate their blood sugar.

Diabetes is one of the most common feline endocrine diseases. Many diabetic cats cease needing insulin or have their insulin needs significantly decreased once their carbohydrate level is lowered. While some cats are more sensitive to carbohydrate rich diets, the bottom line is that, by nature, cats are not designed to consume a high carbohydrate diet or one that is water-depleted. Lack of exercise is also an issue and to prevent diabetes in your cat you should focus on keeping your kitty lean. Feed a portion-controlled, high moisture diet and make sure she gets some exercise daily.

Conclusion

A low carbohydrate/ high protein diet can help in controlling the blood glucose level in diabetic cats, and in reaching and maintaining ideal weight. A diet high in dietary fiber may serve as an alternative. Managing your cat’s diabetes requires diligence and communication between you and your veterinarian.

Best Cat Food for Cats with Allergies

Best Cat Food for Cats with Allergies

Studies have shown that food allergies are the third most common type of feline allergy, outranked in frequency only by allergies to flea bites and inhaled substances. An allergen is a substance to which the cat’s system is abnormally sensitive and reacts to. These symptoms become evident and can intensify over extended periods of time, usually taking months for the cats immune system to break down with standard cat foods. The good news is, most cats with food allergies can be helped if you feed him the best cat food for cats with allergies. If your cat is having an allergic reaction or your veterinarian has recommended a hypoallergenic diet, consider the following cat food choices.

Best Rated Food for Cats with Allergies

Symptoms

The most visible signs of a food allergy is the persistent scratching, signs of skin lesions, hair loss, and lack of a healthy coat. The itching that typically signals the presence of a food allergy is caused by the eruption of small, pale, fluid-filled lumps on a cat’s skin, which form in response to the presence of an allergen. Although itchy, irritated skin problems are the most common signs of allergies, an estimated 10  to 15 percent of affected cats also exhibit gastrointestinal signs, such as vomiting and diarrhea.  One of the most frustrating things about food allergies is that there really isn’t an easy way to test. While many tests can be performed a veterinarian, by using blood, saliva, and  hair, there is no proof they work entirely. There are also online tests for cat owners to buy that claim they can diagnose food allergies or sensitivities, but again not accurate findings.the best way to confirm an allergen is by using an elimination diet in a food trial by choosing a diet that has one kind of protein which your cat has never eaten before. If your cat symptoms get better after 8 weeks, you can start adding more ingredients back in to your cats diet. If your cat has an allergic reaction, you will know which food is the culprit.

Common Allergens

While the overall percentage of cats that have food allergies is low, there are some ingredients that are more common than others where foods are concerned. The most commonly reported food allergies are chicken, beef, fish, dairy, and egg. The most common of those is beef, while dairy and fish are in second and third place. There is nothing unique about these ingredients other than cats are exposed to them a lot in their foods, no matter the quality of that food. Even more surprising is that grains are not a common cause of food allergies and most cats are allergic to animal proteins. There are rare cases in which a cat is allergic to a specific grain, or plant-source such as potato, or carrot, but this is less common than animal protein. Gluten allergies are rare in cats, but many food manufacturers advertise gluten free formulas being good for cats with allergies.

Conclusion

If your cat is having symptoms of a food allergy or intolerance, he should see a veterinarian. If a food allergy is found, then the specific allergen should be identified and removed from your cats diet. Through testing, elimination and patience, you should be able to pinpoint any ingredients your cat is affected by.

Best Cat Food for Urinary Health

Best Cat Food for Urinary Health

A common problem in cats is Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD), which is an inflammation of the lining of the bladder and urethra. It is caused by the formation of struvite mineral deposits in the urinary tract. If you notice your cat having an increased frequency of urination or shows signs of discomfort and strain during urination, he may have a partial blockage of the urethra. Other signs maybe blood in the urine, urinating outside the litter box or crying while in the litter box. Your cat’s diet plays a important role in the prevention of urinary tract issues. If you’re interested in keeping your cats urinary health on track or need to prevent a recurrence of urinary tract disease, then you will want to take a closer look at the best cat food for urinary health.

Top 3 Best Cat Food for Urinary Health

Prevention

Preventing urinary health problems begins with diet and most issues are dietary in nature. Listed are recommendations on how to keep your cat’s diet healthy while keeping urinary issues at bay.

High Protein –  Real meat helps maintain an acidic pH in the urinary tract, keeping the minerals dissolved in the urine so they can be excreted out. Most dry foods are high in grain proteins, which are alkalizing meaning high protein cat foods are better than grain-based foods. Raw meat diets are best at preventing FLUTD, followed by canned foods, which contain more meat and fewer grains than dry food.

Water – Dilution of the urine is a frequently overlooked factor with urinary issues. Cats who only eat dry food may be chronically dehydrated, without sufficient fluids in their systems to flush the kidneys. In nature, cats get most of their fluids from their juicy prey and don’t have an instinct for water drinking. The easiest way correcting dehydration is to feed a wet food diet, or provide a water fountain that encourages cats to drink.

Supplements –  Digestive enzyme supplements like Pet Health Solutions, begin working in the stomach, just like enzymes in raw food. Usually they encourage growth of friendly gut bacteria and improve immune function. Cranberry and Vitamin C support urinary health. The pills can be crushed up and added to food if your cat won’t chew them.

Low Ash and Magnesium –  Ash refers to the total mineral content of a food. It gets its name from the laboratory procedure used to measure mineral content which is burning a sample at high heat until nothing is left but the mineral ash. The major minerals calcium, phosphorus and magnesium are all necessary for life, so ash is positive but with the right balance. Excessive minerals, especially magnesium are thought to be underlying factors in FLUTD. In dry foods look for less than 7% ash and 1% magnesium. In wet foods look for less than 1.5% ash and 0.02% magnesium.

Wet or Dry Food

Water is the most important thing for your cats urinary tract health. As for the benefits of wet food, many cats do seem to find it more palatable and this can be especially important if you have a cat with a finicky appetite. Wet food also has a much higher water content and this is helpful in preventing urinary issues. More water means more diluted urine, so anything potentially problematic will be less concentrated. Cats consume double the amount of water when fed a water-rich diet versus dry food. Wet cat food mostly consists of high protein meat which is as close as you can get to a cats natural diet without raw feeding.

Some cat owners find dry kibble to be more convenient and many vets feel that dry food is better for lowing a cats PH balance. Studies on acid in urine found that lowering the PH can consistently reduce the change of a struvite blockage. Dry food could be helpful for that reason alone.

If you have concerns about your cats urinary health, consult your veterinarian for advice on the best diet for your cat based on his health.

Conclusion

Your cat’s urinary health is important and so is feeding him a high quality cat food. If your cat displays symptoms of FLUTD or any health issue, he should be seen right away by a veterinarian, who can assess the problem.
