Cats, unlike dogs, are not pack animals. Even kitty siblings, from the same litter, tend to want their own space. Sharing a litter box can be stressful for some cats. A multi-cat household should have the same number of litter boxes as the number of cats, plus an extra box.

Your cats probably have very different personalities and this means they may also have different quirks about using the litter box.

One may be an active digger who conjures up dust in the air or leaves more litter outside of the box than inside.

Some cats may prefer one type of litter while others want another type. This is not unusual in households that have an older cat and a younger cat.

Sometimes the older cat may need to use a specialized litter that is designed to be gentler on their paws while the younger doesn’t need this requirement.

Some cats maybe more sensitive to litter dust or perfumes which require them to use a more natural cat litter. While all this may seem overwhelming, you know your cats best. But before you make a final decision on a cat litter for your multiple cats please read on.

Types Of Cat Litter For Multiple Cats

  • Clumping Clay – This is one of the most popular types of kitty litter. Most clumping clay litters are made from bentonite, which is a highly absorbent clay that forms clumps when exposed to liquids. The benefit of a clumping clay is that cleaning the litter box is easy. Both scented and unscented varieties are available in clumping clay litter.
  • Non-Clumping Clay – This type of clay litter still absorbs moisture, but does not form clumps. This could result in cleaning your cat’s litter box more often. Non-clumping clay litter tends to be cheaper than its clumping counterpart.
  • Crystal – Crystal litter is typically made of small bits of dried silica. It tends to be more expensive than other types of cat litter. Fans of crystal litter say it’s worth the price tag because it lasts longer, dust-free and is biodegradable.
  • Pine – This is a natural, recycled option. Pine litter needs to be replaced more often than some of the more traditional options, but the fresh scent has made believers out of many cat owners.
  • Paper – This type of cat litter is made from post-consumer recycled paper and is available in pellet or granule form. Paper litter contains no dust and is absorbent. Regular litter box cleaning will be necessary with the pellet form because clumping does not happen. You can expect clumps with the granule variety.

What To Consider When Choosing A Cat Litter For Multiple Cats?

  • High Absorbency – Litters made for multiple cats typically are more absorbent than those marketed for general use. This means it will soak up more fluids, clump better and create a more efficient litter box.
  • Low Dust and Minimal Tracking – Look for a litter that doesn’t create a cloud of dust every time you pour it into litter box. High-dust litters can cause respiratory problems and can contribute to litter tracking.
  • Clumping – Considered the best for all types of cat litter and situations. When it comes to cat litter, clumping is everything. If a litter does not clump well, the litter box and the area around it will be a mess. Weak clumping ability means you will have a hard time cleaning your litter box and will use more litter over time.
  • Extreme Odor Control – These litters are better at controlling odors which is important in a multiple cat home. The right litter can help to neutralize odors through effective absorption and the right materials. Litters that contain chemical fragrances are rarely preferred by cats. While they may smell good to some humans, they’re offensive to your cat’s sense of smell. A good unscented litter is the best choice.

Conclusion

There are a lot of cat litters available on the market today, with many pros and cons. Depending on your budget and kitty’s preferences and needs, you will have to select the product that is best for all.

What are your thoughts on pellet litter? We would love to try to eliminate dust and harmful chemicals. Do cats take well to using it?

  2. Cat Mania

Pellet litter is a good alternative to conventional litter because it is an eco-friendly, natural, recycled, non-tracking, no-dust, and 100% safe. Most cats do well with it but it's really just preference. Its worth a try!
