To better understand the Meow Mix Original Choice Dry Cat Food recipe, we analyzed the first 5 ingredients.

Ground Yellow Corn may provide some beneficial nutrients to cats, but is not biologically appropriate. Corn is difficult to digest and pales in comparison to animal protein. Corn used as the primary ingredient in cat food is an inexpensive source of calories.

Corn Gluten Meal does contain protein but not the kind of protein that cats digest very well. Cats have to eat twice as much corn to get the same amount of protein that they would from animal proteins.

Chicken By-Product Meal is made up of the clean parts of the carcass of slaughtered chicken, such as necks, feet, undeveloped eggs and intestines which has been ground or otherwise reduced in particle size. This is a cheap way for pet food companies to keep the protein levels up and the production costs down. This is considered a “suitable” source of protein for pet food.

Soybean Meal is a common source of protein in many cat foods because it is less expensive than meat proteins. Soy contains enzyme inhibitors that have been known to produce serious gastric distress, reduced protein digestion and chronic deficiencies in amino acid uptake in cats.

Beef tallow is the fat extracted from rendered beef, and by law, must not be derived from chemically euthanized animals.

Chicken broth is rich in vitamins, minerals and collagen. These components can help improve your cat’s digestion and overall immunity.

Chicken is a good source of protein, low in fat, low in sodium and is a low-carb food.

Dried egg product is eggs separated from shells and is considered a quality protein. They are highly digestible, and they provide a great source of antioxidants and nutrients.

Carrots are an excellent source of vitamins and minerals, including healthy beta-carotene.

Tapioca starch is a highly digestible food source and is important in dry food for shape, texture and density of kibble. This is very important, as mouth feel and the structure of the kibble.

Is Meow Mix A Good Cat Food?

With the use of low-quality ingredients, mystery protein sources, questionable fillers, artificial colors & flavors, and animal by-product meals, I would say it isn’t a good cat food.

When considering the Meow Mix dry food ingredients there are several fillers within the first 5 ingredients, which offer felines nothing nutritionally. In addition to that there many low-quality grains, low animal protein content, inclusion of wheat, by-products, and meals too high on list.

While the wet food recipes are better than the dry food, they are not great. When compared to other wet and canned cat food brands the protein is a bit lower. Also, there are by-products, unspecified fish, wheat flour, soy, rice, and other fillers high on the ingredient list of most recipes.

Where Is Meow Mix Cat Food Sold?

Meow Mix Cat Foods are available in most grocery store chains and big box stores, although varieties may vary. You can also purchase Meow Mix online through Amazon, Chewy, and various pet food retailers.

I'm grateful for your review and analysis, but it leaves me mystified why my young cat loves it so much. He self feeds an expensive kibble, and I chop fresh beef liver & feed him that twice a day because when I got him he'd been poorly nourished. He seemed thin & so I borrowed some Meow Mix from a neighbor & mix it with the First Mate. I don't know what they put in the Meow Mix that makes it such a hit, but now that I see what's in it it'll be off my list. I had thought it was interesting that they don't list the ingredients on the bag, and I'm glad I found your website.

I have cats who do the same and also love Meow Mix! You just never know with cats but offering healthy options helps!

  3. Brenda

I also research this to find out why the cats love it so much and through my research I understand that the ingredient beef tallow May have something to do with their addiction to it

  4. James Higdon

I purchaced a 30lb bag of Meow Mix at Walmart and my cats vomit every time they eat it. Did I get a bad batch ?

Hi James, Is this food new to your cats? If so you may want to slow introduce it by mixing it in with their current food. If this is not the case you may want to check https://www.meowmix.com/ for any recalls or recipe changes that maybe affecting your cats.
